A merican A ssociation of P etroleum G eologists Since its founding in 1917, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists has been a pillar of the world-wide scientific community. The original purpose of AAPG, to foster scientific research, to advance the science of geology, to promote technology, and to inspire high professional conduct, still guides the Association today. To know more about AAPG go to www.aapg.orgTo be a member in AAPG click here Below is an article written by Robbie Gries, Past President, AAPG when she visited Oman : Why a Student Chapter of AAPG? Initiative…that’s one reason organizing and running a student chapter is important. Students will self sort into those with “initiative” and those that just let things happen. Initiative means making things happen. Students, by creating a successful student chapter, will take on the leadership roles to set up meetings, build a program committee, set up a nominating committee, conduct an election of officers, create and develop a newsletter, run a field trip, organize a short course, and even to throw a party. The ‘initiative’ shown in these efforts identify future geology professionals that can make things happen, that can lead, can manage, can be creative and can improvise. These are important characteristics that are not necessarily taught in school, but are very important in job searches and in a young geologist’s career.
Companies look at “activities” of a student when they look at a resume. They will ask about a student’s involvement, their time spent outside the classroom. They want people with initiative and leadership abilities. They want people who have worked and will work within a team. Those characteristics can be developed and showcased in Student Chapter activities. Additionally, students develop stronger friendships by working together on Chapter projects…these friendships will last for an entire career. And they become valuable networking tools throughout one’s career. Students develop skills around learning to run a meeting, learning to edit a Newsletter, learning to organize and run a trip, learning to pick the right people for the right job. Often people are selected for their “social” position instead of their abilities…it is critical to learn to select committee chairs and officers because of their strengths for the job. Students also learn the necessary diplomacy with assignments of chores. The interaction between students of a Student Chapter with the local industry community is another enormous advantage for students. Mentors and advocates are developed, internships are offered and references for future jobs can be developed. What better way for a student to get to know local industry geologists than to call them and invite them to speak at their student chapter meeting? Or invite them to a student party? Or invite them to help lead a student field trip or short course? Most geologists love to mentor and spend time with students…they just need to be asked. A Student Chapter president in Croatia was expressing frustration to me last year that only a small percentage of the students at his university really helped and participated with the Chapter activities. He asked me how to get them ALL motivated to help. I said, “You never will! But that is to your advantage. You are developing leadership skills as well as management and persuasion skills…these will serve you well for your entire career. The students who do not participate will not have the opportunity to develop these skills…and good working relationships. In AAPG, of 31,000 members, we have only about 6-7000 who are “active” in the association. They are the ones who reap the greatest educational and networking benefits…and that is the way it always is, whether in a Student Chapter or an Association. The people who put the most into something…get the most out of it.” I congratulate you on your successful chapter and know that you will all be rewarded for the hard work on it!Robbie Gries, Past President, AAPG
