SEG

The Society
of Exploration Geophysicists promotes the science of geophysics and the
education of exploration geophysicists. The Society fosters the expert
and ethical practice of geophysics in the exploration and development of
natural resources, in characterizing the near-surface, and in mitigating
earth hazards.

Below is an
article written by Mr.Peter
M. Duncan, the president of SEG while he visited Oman and gave a talk in
SQU.
Greetings from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists
Congratulations to all of you on the inauguration of the OMAN AAPG-SEG
Student Group, Department of Earth Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University .
You are now the newest of the SEG’s 117 student sections. These
sections are located in more than 30 countries around the globe and
represent nearly 1500 geophysicists. We are truly honored to welcome you
as our newest members. You represent the future of the SEG as THE global
society for the geophysical community.
The SEG
exists to promote the science of geophysics, to promote the professional
practice of that science and to provide a sense of community to those
who love the earth sciences in general and geophysics in particular. It
was my pleasure and privilege to visit SQU on September 15, 2003. I was
welcomed warmly and truly made to feel part of the community in Oman.
This is, to me, one of the more important advantages of being an SEG
member – a ready made place to find friends no matter where you travel.
I was greatly impressed with the scale and beauty of the SQU campus and
the Earth Science facilities. I was equally impressed with the number of
enthusiastic students who attended my brief lecture. The earth sciences
are clearly alive and being well served in Oman.
This is an
important time for your new organization. You will have to work hard to
find programs that are interesting and valuable to your membership.
Remember that your members want to belong to an organization that brings
them personal benefits, has a worthwhile purpose and is at the same time
enjoyable. After all, being a geophysicist can be fun too.
This is an
important time for the SEG as well. We have passed the 19000 member mark
and for the first time in the SEG’s 73 year history more than 50% of the
membership lives or works outside of the US. Providing services and a
sense of community to an increasingly global membership is a real
challenge to the SEG, one that I intend to face head on in my coming
year as President. It is my intention to increase the online presence of
the SEG to facilitate a global exchange of ideas amongst our members.
But beyond virtual community there must be a physical sense of community
as well, and a real opportunity to meet fellow geophysicists. This we
will achieve through more active support of sections such as yours and a
more aggressive initiation of regional meetings, courses, Distinguished
Lectures and similar programs around the globe.
Congratulations again on the formation of your student group. I wish you
all success. You may count on my personal support and the support of the
SEG staff in Tulsa. And as each of you graduates and moves from the
university to the working world, it is my fervent hope that you will
continue to find the SEG is a community worth belonging to.
